How to Prep for Your Tattoo Appointment (From an Artist Who Gets It)

How to Prep for Your Tattoo Appointment (From an Artist Who Gets It)

Whether it's your first tattoo or your fifteenth, showing up prepared helps your tattoo look better, heal smoother, and keeps the whole process way more comfortable—for both of us.

Here’s everything you need to know before your session:

🥤 1. Stay Hydrated

Hydrated skin = better ink retention. It’s smoother, more elastic, and easier to tattoo. Start drinking more water the day before your appointment and keep it up the day of.

🍽 2. Eat a Good Meal

Low blood sugar can make you dizzy or faint. Eat something with protein and carbs before your appointment—you’ll feel way more stable and relaxed.

🍷 3. Avoid Alcohol (and Caffeine if You Can)

No alcohol 24 hours before your appointment—it thins your blood and makes the process harder for both of us. Caffeine can spike anxiety and sensitivity, so go easy.

💦 4. Moisturize Before (But Not the Day Of)

Soft, healthy skin holds ink better. Use an unscented lotion in the days leading up to your appointment, but skip it the day of so we can place the stencil cleanly.

👖 5. Dress for the Area

Wear clothes that give me easy access to the spot we’re tattooing. Thigh piece? Loose shorts. Back tattoo? Button-up you can flip. Arm? Sleeveless or loose tee. Bonus points if you don't mind getting ink on it.

🛌 6. Bring What You Need to Be Comfortable

Especially for longer sessions, bring:

  • Headphones
  • A small snack + water
  • Hoodie or blanket if you run cold
  • Phone charger

🧠 7. Come With Trust

You picked me for a reason. Show up open-minded, ask questions, and let’s create something meaningful together.

Final Thoughts

A little prep goes a long way. If you take care of your body, it takes care of your tattoo.
You don’t have to be perfect—you just have to be present.
