The Ultimate Guide to Tattoo Aftercare: Keep Your Ink Looking Fresh

Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience, but proper aftercare is essential to ensure your ink heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime. Whether it’s your first tattoo or your latest addition, following these aftercare steps will help keep your tattoo vibrant and healthy.

Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)

  1. Leave the Bandage On – Your artist will cover your tattoo with a bandage or plastic wrap. Leave it on for the recommended time to protect it from bacteria. At Burning Rebellion Tattoo, I use an adhesive bandage and recommend wearing it for the first 24-48 hours.

  2. Wash Gently – Once you remove the bandage, wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your clean hands—no washcloths or loofahs.

  3. Pat Dry – Use a soft, clean paper towel to pat the tattoo dry. Avoid rubbing or using fabric towels, which can harbor bacteria.

  4. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment – Use a fragrance-free, antibacterial ointment (like Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific balm) to keep the area moisturized.

Healing Process (Days 3-14)

  • Moisturize Regularly – Switch to a fragrance-free lotion and apply a thin layer a few times a day to prevent dryness and itching.

  • Avoid Scratching or Picking – As your tattoo heals, it may scab and peel. This is normal! Resist the urge to scratch or pick at it to avoid fading and scarring.

  • Stay Clean – Keep your tattoo free from dirt and bacteria by washing your hands before touching it and wearing loose clothing over the area.

What to Avoid

  • No Soaking – Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and long baths for at least two weeks. Showers are fine, but don’t let the water hit your tattoo directly for too long.

  • No Direct Sunlight – Keep your tattoo out of the sun and avoid tanning beds. Once healed, always use SPF to prevent fading.

  • No Heavy Workouts – Excessive sweating and friction from workouts can irritate your healing tattoo. Take it easy for the first few days, especially if your tattoo is in a high-movement area.

Long-Term Care

  • Hydrate & Moisturize – Keeping your skin hydrated will help your tattoo stay vibrant for years.

  • Use Sunscreen – Sun exposure can cause your tattoo to fade over time. Use at least SPF 30 when spending time outdoors.

  • Touch-Ups – If your tattoo fades or needs a refresh, Burning Rebellion Tattoo offers one free touch up on tattoos that have been properly cared for.

By following these aftercare steps, you’ll ensure your tattoo heals properly and stays looking fresh for years to come. Have any questions about aftercare? Feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to help!
